Collaborative Community Action to Prevent Youth Violence and Promote
Youth Development
PROGRAM
: The U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is seeking
applications for collaborative communities and schools to develop and enhance youth violence
prevention activities.
DEADLINE
: June 19, 2002.
FUNDING
: $2.8 million for 12 to 16 awards in two categories: up to $150,000 a year each in
total costs for six to eight vulnerable youth project awards; and up to $200,000 a year each for
school-based mental health projects. The project period is two years.
ELIGIBILITY
: For vulnerable youth project awards: domestic, public and private nonprofit
organizations, such as community-based advocacy, health, mental health, and social service,
faith-based service, parent and teacher, consumer and family organizations, institutions and
associations; and public and private education systems, institutions and agencies. For school-
based mental health projects: public and private schools and school systems only.

Presidential Freedom Scholarships
PROGRAM
: The Corporation for National Service gives scholarships through this program—
formerly known as the President’s Student Service Scholarships—to high school students who
have given outstanding service to their community.
DEADLINE
: June 28, 2002.
FUNDING
: $500 to be matched by $500 from local sources for each scholarship.
ELIGIBILITY
: Each high school in the U.S. may select two students (one junior and one
senior) to receive the scholarships. Students must have completed at least 100 hours of service
within the past 12 months and—new this year—must write a brief essay reflecting on the
significance of community service after the September 11 attacks.

Washington Mutual Foundation Teacher Certification Scholarships
PROGRAM
: Washington Mutual Foundation, supported by the financial services company,
provides scholarships through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
to assist teachers in pursuing National Board certification.
DEADLINE
: Scholarships will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.
FUNDING
:
$1 million. Scholarships will cover up to 50 percent of the NBPTS $2,300
certification fee. Funds can also be used to cover retake fees. Recipients may also be eligible to
apply for zero-interest loans from Washington Mutual for the remainder of the fee.
