Oracle Internet Academies
JIM HORNE
Commissioner of Education
The Department of Education has been approached again by Oracle Corporation of California to
participate in another joint agreement to offer the Oracle Internet Academy training to Florida
secondary school students.
In 2001-2002 and 2002-2003, thirty Florida secondary schools were awarded projects for the
first Oracle Internet Academies. Each school agreed to dedicate one teacher and one class of 11
th
and 12
th grade students (that ranged in class size from 15-30) to the academy. Both the teacher
and the students were trained in Structured Query Language (SQL), database programming and
Java programming over the two-year period. At the end of year one and year two the teacher and
the students were allowed to sit for Oracle Certification exams at reduced costs.
No monetary award went to the school. The school benefited by the Department of Education
agreeing to pay Oracle for the training and certification of the teacher and the students for the

two years. Each superintendent, teacher and school principal had to commit to keeping the
€
program going for at least five (5) years and had an agreement of participation with the
€
Department of Education and a copyright protection agreement with Oracle for the use of their
€
materials.
€
While we experienced a few growing pains in the first round of projects, the academy project has
€
been an overwhelming success and has benefited Florida students, teachers, and employers.
€
We would like to determine if there is any interest in participating in this project again with
€
Oracle. If we have enough interest, we will approach our leadership requesting that we proceed
€
with another agreement with Oracle for another 30 schools. The project would be a competitive
€
Request for Proposal (RFP) that would be sent to each district superintendent. The
€
superintendent would be the RFP submitter of all applications for that district. The number of
€
applications that could be considered for awards would be limited by the number of secondary
€
school students in each district.
€
If you are interested in participating in such an academy, please let Rose Raynak know at
€
Rose.Raynak@fldoe.org. Rose will collect the information and let us know how to proceed.
€
Rose can also be reached at (850) 245-9020 or by Suncom at 205-9020 if you would like to
€
discuss the particulars of the current Oracle Internet Academies. The curriculum framework that
€
was developed to accommodate the project is available on our web site at
