INVITATION TO THE FLORIDA SCHOOL HEALTH AND HIGHER
EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM
Your district is invited to send a team of professionals to participate in the Fifth Annual Florida
School Health and Higher Education Symposium. This event will examine issues of coordinated
school health and focus on the development of strategies to enhance the preparation of school
health professionals. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss current issues and plan for
long-term system improvements to more effectively address the critical health issues facing
schools today, in particular the use of technology in health education.

The symposium will be presented February 5-6, 2004, in Safety Harbor, Florida (near Clearwater
and the Tampa Airport). Symposium registration information and a tentative agenda are
enclosed. The findings of this symposium will be documented and published.
Districts are asked to send a team of four to six members, including personnel representing
various roles:
?
Elementary, middle school, and/or high school teachers (including health instructors and
physical education instructors);
?
Elementary, middle school, and/or high school nurse and/or health care providers;
?
Elementary, middle school, and/or high school administrators;
?
Elementary, middle school, and/or high school guidance counselors, school
psychologists, and/or social workers;
?
District supervisors and coordinators of health, physical education, nutrition, and student
support services; and
?
District administrators and staff development supervisors or staff.
Participation is supported through the Florida Department of Education (DOE) Coordinated
School Health Program.
Participants will be responsible for making individual hotel
reservations no later than Wednesday, January 14, 2004, directly with the hotel at (727)
726-1161.
Conference rate is $93.00 per night, single or double, with a $10.00 charge per extra
person. The DOE, through the cooperative agreement with Florida Atlantic University (FAU),
will reimburse lodging and per diem costs for participants who travel more than 50 miles to the
symposium. Each participant is asked to make every effort to share a double occupancy sleeping
room with a team member. Travel costs to Safety Harbor will be the responsibility of each
participating agency.

Reimbursement:
Reimbursement will be made to participants after the meeting for lodging and meals. The nightly
hotel rate is $93.00 (single/double) with a $10.00 charge per extra person. Meals are reimbursed at
the fixed rate of $21/day.
Travel arrangements to and from the meeting are the responsibility of each participating agency.
A cooperative arrangement has been made with Florida Atlantic University (FAU) to coordinate
travel reimbursement. Upon receipt of your registration, FAU will mail a reimbursement packet to
you. With prompt submission of reimbursement materials, you may expect your reimbursement
within four to six weeks after the meeting.
Hotel accommodations for attendees more than 50 miles from Safety Harbor will be reimbursed for
the nights of Wednesday, February 4th and Thursday, February 5th. (No reimbursement for hotel
accommodations or meals will be made to participants who work less than 50 miles from Safety
Harbor, pursuant to s. 112.061, F.S.)
Cost of substitute teachers will not be reimbursed.
Attire
Business casual. Meeting room temperatures vary, so you may want to carry a light
acket.
