Electronic Transactions in the Child Nutrition Programs
The USDA, Food and Nutrition Service Child Nutrition Division has issued the attached
Question and Answer (Q&A) document to provide guidance on the electronic transfer of
information in Child Nutrition Programs (CNPs). There is no Federal requirement for State
agencies or school food service authorities (SFAs) to establish a system for collecting
Program information electronically or via the Internet.
This technical assistance note is intended to assist Food and Nutrition Management and SFAs
in determining whether conversion to electronic systems would be appropriate. Keep in mind
that in an electronic system, electronic documents are legal documents and are intended to be
as legally binding as the paper documents they replace.
At the end of the Q&A’s is a definition section covering the more technical terms and
concepts used in this guidance.
