Subject:
ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION SURVEY

The 2003 Legislature established, in the General Appropriations Act, a study of existing alternative
education programs to determine their effectiveness in improving student learning. The legislation
requires each school district to submit a report describing its current alternative education programs,
assessing the effectiveness of these programs, and identifying how these programs would have to
be amended to produce student learning gains of 1.5 years in 180 days. The Department is required
to summarize these district reports and provide both the summary and recommendations for
legislative action to the Governor, the President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House of
Representatives by January 1, 2004.

In order to assist districts in this process, the Department has developed an on-line survey designed
to collect the information requested by the Legislature. We request that either you or a designated
staff person complete this survey by December 1, 2003. To access the survey, please go to
http://sss.usf.edu/aepsurvey and follow the prompts.

Alternative Education Survey

All completed surveys will be submitted to the Department so that staff can compile responses into a
report that will summarize current alternative education efforts for academically unsuccessful
students, evaluations of the effectiveness of these efforts, and potential program amendments
designed to increase student learning gains. These materials and additional information will be made
available in the near future and should enhance current alternative education efforts.

Thank you in advance for participating in these efforts. If you have questions or need additional
information, please contact Mary Jo Butler or Michael Lisle.
