SUBJECT: K-TRAC (a software program) for School Meals Initiative (SMI) Reviews
The USDA has received several messages from State agencies about the approval status of K-
TRAC software. This software has recently been reviewed, and according to the findings it
requires substantial change to remain approved. It is our understanding that K-TRAC has sent
letters to clients indicating that they will not be making the required update/upgrade to their
software. If a School Food Authority (SFA) has information that this is the path that K-TRAC
intends to take, they must switch to another USDA approved program no later than July 1, 2004.
In addition, USDA has sent a letter to all of its approved software vendors reminding them of the
requirements for approval and giving them a deadline of December 31, 2003 to have their
software updated and submitted to USDA’s software review coordinator. Any software vendor
not meeting the December 31, 2003 deadline, will be removed from the list of approved software
programs maintained on the Healthy School Meals Resource System web page:
