FROM: John Winn, Deputy Commissioner
RE: Acceleration Survey
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
The State Board of Education has been mandated by the Legislature (House Bill 1739) to conduct a study on
acceleration mechanisms. The report must include an ongoing summary of activities and address the extent to which
acceleration mechanisms are currently utilized by school districts and public postsecondary educational institutions.
The attached short survey asks questions relating to dual enrollment, Advanced Placement, International
Baccalaureate, AICE and high school honors courses. It is designed to provide information for the required report.
The data collected via this survey will be added to other statewide data to create a comprehensive picture of what is
happening in the state related to student acceleration.
The final acceleration report will be submitted to the Legislature and the Governor in December. The information in
the report will be used to better understand and report on practices relating to acceleration mechanisms. Your
assistance in providing this information is critical to developing an accurate picture of how options for acceleration
are handled across Florida.
Please respond to the web based survey no later than September 12, 2003. You may complete the survey at the link
below and submit is directly from the web.
