AND DRUG-FREE SCHOOLS COORDINATORS' MEETING
The Department of Education Coordinated School Health and Safe and Drug-Free Schools (SDFS) programs, along
with the Safe, Disciplined and Drug-Free Schools Project of the University of North Florida, Florida Institute of
Education, are co-sponsoring the 2003 Coordinators' Meeting, “
Keeping Florida’s Students on Track: Healthy,
Safe, and Drug-Free
.” This event will continue our collaborative effort to improve communications, enhance
networking at the local and state levels, and consolidate professional development activities for school health and
SDFS prevention professionals. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss current health and prevention
issues, network with other school professionals, and receive needed information to prepare them for the new school
year. Featured speakers will include Marcus Conyers, who will introduce
“BrainSMART Health Wise: Cultivating
Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities.”
This meeting will be held
September 29-October 1, 2003,
in
Captiva Island,
at the South Seas Resort Hotel.

Families will provide a presentation of the
Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey
data featuring school domain risk
and protective factors.

1-888-707-7888
. All participants are
responsible for making individual hotel reservations. Hotel reservations must be made by
September 4, 2003
, in
order to receive the $99.00 conference rate. When calling please ask for Group #5895F7 and indicate that you are
with the Department of Education: School Health and Safe and Drug-Free Schools Coordinators' Meeting. The
direct phone number for the resort is (239) 472-5111; however, all reservations are made at the number listed above.
Safe and Drug-Free Schools Coordinators should use SDFS Entitlement funds to support participation and travel
costs. Other school health participation will be supported through the Florida Department of Education (DOE)
Coordinated School Health Program. The DOE, through a cooperative agreement with Florida Atlantic University,
will reimburse lodging costs and per diem for the first one hundred registered participants (other than Safe and
Drug-Free Coordinators) who travel more than 50 miles to the conference. Each participant is asked to make every
effort to share a double occupancy hotel room with a district team member. Travel costs to Captiva Island will be
the responsibility of each participating agency.
Please fax registrations by Friday, September 4, 2003, to (850)
245-9957, or e-mail to CSHPRegistration@fldoe.org.
The Coordinators’ Meeting is an exciting opportunity for district-level personnel from school districts and county
health departments to network with fellow coordinators, build institutional support for school health programs, and
plan together for intervention and prevention strategies.
