Subject:
2003 LEGISLATION - MILITARY STUDENT EDUCATION
The 2003 Legislature passed Senate Bill 2802 creating a new section in the Florida Statutes that requires
the Department of Education to assist in the transition of school-age dependents of military personnel by
improving the timely transfer of student records, establishing procedures to lessen the adverse impact of
moves from the end of the junior and senior year, and encouraging or enhancing partnerships between
military bases and the school system.
Currently, 22 active military installations and three joint commands are located in Florida, including more
than 80,000 active-duty military personnel. Many school districts have already developed collaborative
partnerships with the military bases located within the district and work cooperatively to assist with the
transition of K12 military students into their schools. Department staff is developing technical assistance
materials to assist with implementing this legislation and enhancing current collaborative efforts. These
materials and additional information will be made available in the near future.
