SUBJECT:
Family and School Partnership for Student Achievement
The 2003 Legislature enacted the Family and School Partnership for Student Achievement Act.
The purpose of this new law (section 1002.23, Florida Statutes) is to provide parents with
specific information about their child’s educational progress; provide information about their
choices and opportunities for involvement in their child’s education; and provide a framework
for building and strengthening partnerships among parents, teachers, principals, district school
superintendents, and other school personnel. A summary of the bill is attached.
Department staff is working with school and district staff, community partners, parents, and state
PTA leaders to plan appropriate implementation of this legislation. Additional technical
assistance materials and information regarding these provisions will be made available in the
near future. We encourage you to begin to make schools and those who work with families
aware of these new requirements
. In order to facilitate communication and provide targeted
technical assistance, we ask that you complete and return the attached form to identify the
staff person who will be responsible for coordinating the implementation of the Family and
School Partnership for Student Achievement Act in your district.

involved in their child’s educational program. This legislation will support your commitment for
building and strengthening a comprehensive program that will enhance positive student
achievement. If you need further information, please feel free to contact Linda Thompson or
