Families Building Better Readers Workshops
€
JIM HORNE
Commissioner of Education
The Florida Department of Education has partnered with several school districts and the
University of West Florida to present six Families Building Better Readers workshops this
summer. The workshops are designed for parents of third graders who scored a Level 1 in
reading on the FCAT and are at risk of being retained. Parents who participate in these
workshops will learn simple activities to do with their children over the summer to improve
reading performance.
These six meetings will serve as models for districts who would like to present their own
workshops for parents. I encourage staff from surrounding districts to attend any one of the six
sessions. In addition to the workshop presentations, attendees will receive a copy of the written
materials designed for parents and a parent toolkit. The printed materials, including lesson plans
for each activity, (in English, but coming soon in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Portuguese and
French), can also be downloaded from the parent section of the Just Read, Florida! website at
http://www.justreadflorida.com/docs/fws-activities01.pdf
Many district ESE parent services liaisons and FDLRS parent services contacts have received
training in these activities and are available should your district want to host its own workshop.
Contact your local FDLRS Center, or the Bureau of Instructional Support and Community
Services at 850.245.0478 for more information on this available resource.
