PROGRAM
: The National Science Foundation (NSF) is inviting applications to fund projects
that improve science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education for
undergraduate students by improving course and curriculum materials development and
dissemination.
DEADLINE
: June 18, 2003.
FUNDING
: 100 awards across the two areas of (1) educational materials development and (2)
national dissemination; $18 million total for fiscal year 2004.

Treatments for Adolescents with Alcohol Use Disorders (NIAAA)
PROGRAM
: The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) invites
applications to fund studies on behavioral and drug treatments for adolescents with alcohol
disorders. Topics for the studies are: more effective interventions; treatment for concurrent
disorders; interventions for youths co-morbid for alcohol and drug disorders, fetal alcohol
syndrome or alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder; relapse prevention interventions to
maintain recovery; and ways to translate research on effective interventions into service practice.
DEADLINE
: June 1, 2003.
FUNDING
: Research project grants, for varying amounts, for up to five years; small grants
($25,000 - $50,000 per year each) for direct costs for two years; and exploratory/developmental
grants ($100,000 per year each) for direct costs for three years.

Lemelson-MIT Program InvenTeam Grants
PROGRAM
: The Lemelson-MIT Program for Invention and Innovation invites applications for
grants to support high school invention teams, challenging students to be inventive and develop
excitement about the inventive contributions they can make.
InvenTeams (formed by high school students, their teacher(s), and industry mentors) will aim for
a goal of inventing something of value for their schools or local communities.
DEADLINE
: Preliminary applications, May 9, 2003. Invited semi-finalist applications,
September 24, 2003.
FUNDING
: Up to $10,000 each for ten grants.
ELIGIBILITY

High school math, science and technology teachers. Teams may be part of a

Project LASER Research Scholar Mini-Grants
PROGRAM
: The University of South Florida's Linking Academic Scholars to Education
Resources (LASER) program invites applicants for mini-grants to support research consistent
with LASER's goal of improving the special education schooling of impoverished and urban
children and youths.
Projects should research issues pertaining to special education interventions, assessment,
curriculum, school reform, policy, leadership or family involvement.
DEADLINE
: April 30, 2003.
FUNDING
: $5,000 per research award.

Altria Community Kitchen Grants
PROGRAM
: The parent company of Kraft Foods and Philip Morris, Altria, invites applications
for funding to support the operation of innovative nonprofit community kitchens. Funding is
aimed at programs that provide job training opportunities and culinary skill development to the
unemployed, while producing food for vulnerable populations such as the homeless, elderly and
after-school program children.
DEADLINE
: May 2, 2003.
FUNDING
: Awards are up to $50,000 each.
ELIGIBILITY
: United States nonprofit organizations that operate community kitchen

Sallie Mae "Unmet Need" Scholarships
PROGRAM
: The Sallie Mae Fund, the charitable arm of the student loan company, invites
applications for funding under the "Unmet Need" program to assist in bridging the gap between
college costs and financial aid packages for low-income students.
DEADLINE
: May 31, 2003 (application forms required by both student and the institution's
financial aid administrator).
FUNDING
: Up to $3,800 per scholarship; total of $1 million available this year.
ELIGIBILITY
: Undergraduate students who: have been accepted or enrolled in an accredited
post-secondary two- or four-year institution or vocational technical school; demonstrated unmet
need of more than $1000; have a combined family income of $30,000 or less; and have a grade
point average (GPA) of 2.5 to 3.0.

National Geographic Society Education Foundation Teacher Grants
PROGRAM
: National Geographic Society's Education Foundation is inviting applications for
grants to fund teachers promoting geographic knowledge and stewardship of natural and cultural
resources through education.
The foundation invites projects: with the potential to reach many teachers and students with high
impact; that directly engage students and encourage understanding of the relevance and power of
geographic skills, uses of geography and a spatial perspective; that attempt to improve student
achievement through geographic literacy; that explore uses for new technologies; that expand

Jordan Fundamentals Grant Program
PROGRAM
: Funded by Nike's Jordan brand and named in honor of basketball star Michael
Jordan, the Jordan Fundamentals Grant Program recognizes and supports outstanding creative
teaching in public secondary schools that serve economically disadvantaged students.
Grants will be awarded to applicants who develop an outstanding, original lesson plan or
thematic unit that focuses on any academic or vocational-technical subject area and demonstrates
high expectations for students who perform at a variety of academic levels.
DEADLINE
: June 15, 2003.
FUNDING
: Up to 400 grants per year awarded, $2,500 per grant.
ELIGIBILITY
: Paraprofessionals and teachers of students in United States public secondary
schools, grades 6-12. The student population of the school must have an eligibility rate for the
free or reduced-price school lunch program of at least 40%.

Youth Development
PROGRAM
: The Hazen Foundation maintains a national focus on middle and high school
youths in rural and urban low-income and minority communities, for purposes of youth
organization and leadership development around social issues that are important to young people
and the larger community.
Letters of inquiry are invited from organizations that can propose programs that fit the purpose
of the Hazen Foundation, under the Youth Development ideology.

New Generations Program
PROGRAM
: The Theatre Communications Group invites proposals to fund early-career theatre
professionals to be mentored by an established professional in their field, and to assist nonprofit
theatres with successful, innovative audience development programs (targeting young, culturally
specific and under-served audiences). The goal of assisting the future of the nonprofit theatre is
addressed by two focus areas of funding under this program: Mentoring the Leaders of
Tomorrow, and Cultivating the Audiences of Tomorrow.
DEADLINE
: Intent to Apply cards - June 16, 2003. Preliminary Proposals - July 7, 2003.
An independent national panel will invite selected theatres to submit full applications based on
Preliminary Proposals.
