PROGRAM
: Florida Learn & Serve projects are directed at engaging students in service
learning - school and/or community service activities that apply academic curricula and Sunshine
State Standards. Also addressed are the goals of improving student performance, providing for
civic engagement and career exploration, and filling key need areas. Other purposes for these
funds include building infrastructure at the school and district levels for sustained service-
learning efforts.
DEADLINE
: Proposals must be received at the delivery address by close of business on May
30, 2003.

FUNDING
: Total of $724,083 in the first year, divided among three categories; (1) School-
Based Service-Learning Projects (1-year awards) - $209.535; (2) Model School Expansion &
Dissemination Projects (3-year awards) - $257,274; and (3) District Infrastructure-Building
Projects (3-year awards) - $257,274.
ELIGIBILITY
: School districts (district-wide efforts), public school districts on behalf of
individual schools and school district consortia. Only schools previously funded for two or more
years by Florida Learn & Serve may apply for the three-year Model School Expansion &
Dissemination Projects.

Carol M. White Physical Education Program (USDOE)
PROGRAM
: The Carol M. White Physical Education Program, administered by the United
States Department of Education, invites applications for grants to initiate, expand, or improve
physical education programs for students in grades K-12. Including after-school programs, these
projects should be designed to help students progress toward a goal of meeting State standards
for physical education.
DEADLINE
: May 12, 2003.
FUNDING
: $59,500,000 total; estimated number of awards - 198, ranging from $100,000 -
$500,00 each for one year.

: Local educational agencies and community-based organizations, including
faith-based organizations.

Credit Enhancement for Charter School Facilities Program (USDOE)
PROGRAM
: The United States Department of Education (USDOE) is inviting applications
from eligible entities to enhance the credit of charter schools for the purpose of enabling them to
access private-sector and other non-federal capital to acquire, renovate and construct school
facilities at reasonable cost. Entities which receive this funding must deposit the grant funds in a
reserve account and provide schools with technical assistance in various areas such as:
guaranteeing and insuring bonds, notes, evidence of debt, loans and interest, leases of personal
and real property; identifying potential lenders (including private lenders); and facilitating the
issuance of bonds, etc.
DEADLINE
: June 3, 2003.

FUNDING
: Three to five awards will be given, ranging from $2.5 to $10 million each; total
available is $25 million.

: State and local government agencies, private non-profit organizations and
consortia.

Anna Lalor Burdick Program
PROGRAM
: The Lalor Foundation supports nonprofit organizations worldwide in the areas of
reproduction research and education. The Anna Lalor Burdick Program invites proposals for the
purposes of educating young women with inadequate access to reproductive health information.
Reproductive education should be the focus of the proposals. Projects must focus on young
women, including preteens and young mothers.
DEADLINE
: Concept paper applications are due May 15; applicants will be notified if a full
application is invited by July 15; full proposals are due 60 days from the date of notification.
FUNDING
: Grant awards range between $10,000 - $50,000.
ELIGIBILITY
: 501(c)(3) organizations; not designated as a private foundation under Section
509(a).

KaBOOM!-Computer Associates Challenge Grants
PROGRAM
: KaBOOM!, a national non-profit organization, in partnership with Computer
Associates International, Inc. (CA), invite proposals to fund projects to provide safe places for
children to play. Focus of the proposals should be to help give children safe and accessible
places to play by empowering community-based groups to fund and support playground projects.
Projects should be designed as a "challenge" to other fundraising efforts for the participating
groups.
DEADLINE
: Applications are due April 30, 2003.
FUNDING
: Twenty $5,000 grants will be awarded in 2003.

ELIGIBILITY
: Community-based organizations, in partnership with individuals, organizations
or potential investors who will support the project. Projects must be located within a 45-minute
drive of CA employee communities (in Florida, these include Jacksonville, Maitland, and
Tampa).

Microsoft Corporate Giving Program
PROGRAM
: Microsoft invites proposals to fund projects designed to find sustainable solutions
to help individuals and communities realize their potential and grow. Through providing
resources and technology to their nonprofit partners, Microsoft awards grants in four program
areas; (1) Expanding Opportunities Through Technology Access, (2) Strengthening Nonprofits
Through Technology, (3) Developing a Diverse Technology Workforce, and (4) Building
Community.
DEADLINE
: None.
FUNDING
: Varies; consists of monetary grants and in-kind donations of software.

Plan for Social Excellence
PROGRAM
: The Plan for Social Excellence grants funds for the creation and/or support of
innovative pilot projects in education in the United States. The Plan is keenly interested in
funding replications of its own already-existing pilot programs, but innovative projects meeting
the following criteria will also be considered: projects that are "fluid and responsive to the needs
of individual schools and communities," show promise of bringing about a change to the
educational environment, have an evaluation plan and can be easily replicated in other schools.
DEADLINE
: May 2, 2003.
FUNDING
: Grant sizes vary.
