Subject:
Acceleration of Gifted Students

We are pleased to provide you with a research brief on “Acceleration of Gifted Students.” For
students who are gifted, it is appropriate for Educational Plan (EP) teams to discuss acceleration
as a service option. The attached brief provides a summary of the research on acceleration,
including subject and grade skipping, and includes information on the benefits of acceleration,
effects on social and emotional development, and practices that help make acceleration
successful.

For further information about gifted services, please contact Donnajo Smith, Program Specialist
for Gifted, Florida Department of Education, by phone at 850-488-1106 or by e-mail at
Donnajo.Smith@fldoe.org.
