Teen Trendsetter
TM Reading Mentors Program
 
As part of Florida Governor Jeb Bush’s Mentoring Initiative and the "Just Read, Florida!" program,
200 high school students will be selected this summer to participate in the Teen Trendsetter Reading
Mentor Program. Reading Mentors make a difference in their communities and in the lives of
children. Teens are matched with elementary school students who need help improving their reading
skills. Reading Mentors also work in their local high schools to get other students involved in the
program.
 
The Rewards
Teen Trendsetters will:
Get to m
eet and talk with Florida Governor Jeb Bush at the Teen Trendsetter Reading Mentor
Summit at Universal Orlando™.
Make a dif
ference in their communities.
Meet Teen Trendsetters from
around the state and learn how to tutor and mentor children.
 
The Goals
To get high school students involved in reading
mentoring and tutoring programs with their local
elementary schools.
To give elem
entary school children positive role models who can facilitate learning and reading
improvement.
 
The Selection Process
200 Florida high school students will be selected
to participate in the Teen Trendsetter Reading
Mentor Summit.
Selections are based on an essay describing what
makes the student a Teen Trendsetter and how they
would run their program if selected.

mittee includes a panel of educators and representatives of the Governor’s Office,
Florida Trend’s NEXT
magazine and other sponsors.

The Training
Teen Trendsetter Reading Mentors will learn reading, tutoring and m
entoring skills based on the
newest reading research by the Florida Department of Education.
Students also will learn how to start the program
in their local high school.
Training will take place at Universal Orlando during the sum
mer.

Who Can Apply
Applicants m
ust be a Florida high school student for the school term beginning August 2003.
Reading Mentors m
ust be able to devote a minimum of one hour each week to mentoring during the
2003-2004 school year, plus time to initiate the program at their school.
Reading Mentors m
ust be able to attend the Summit this summer (date to be determined) at Orlando,
Florida.
