State of Florida Synopsis: 1999/00
INTRODUCTION
This report provides State level data on Language Enriched Pupils (LEP) and non-LEP
students for the 1999/00 school year (August 1999 through July 2000). All data is provided by
the school districts through the Florida Department of Education Automated Student
Information Data Base with the exception of the information on Magnet schools and programs,
which was obtained by surveying each school district.
This year's report has a number of
changes: Attendance Data is now included on LEP and Non-LEP students, and the Job
Categories for Personnel and Training were collapsed to reflect personnel responsible for direct
instruction and all others. Individual reports are available for each district; to obtain these
reports please contact OMSLE at the address listed on the back page. Please refer to the Guide
to Calculations for specifics on criteria used in all calculations.

Note: "0.00" indicates that there were no students meeting the criteria.
Please note that this is a new method of calculation for the Length of Service in ESOL. Previous year's reporting
captured only those student exited from September through February of the current year, missing all those students
exited at year end. This method captures two years of year end exiters, while eliminating those LF students with
erroneous Exit Dates. Because of this change, we have recalulated the Length of Service for the last five years to
provide longitudinal comparisons.
Source: Survey 3, for year noted - LF Students with valid Exit Dates between 9/1/97 and 2/15/00.

*Notes: Some student demographic records did not have a matching end of year record. Without this
information these students cannot be included in calculations of Average GPA, Dropout Rate, or Retention Rates.
"Graduation Rate" is now a four year adjusted cohort rate. "Dropout Rate" no longer excludes students who are
under 16 years old.

PARTICIPATION IN MAGNET SCHOOLS AND PROGRAMS
LEP PARTICIPATION IN MAGNET SCHOOLS AND PROGRAMS
For the purposes of this report, Magnet Programs are defined as programs which draw their students from more than one school or grade
level, and they are usually specific to a subject area, such as Science or Performing Arts. Magnet Schools are those that have unique
school numbers, and are usually housed in a seperate facility. The types, structure, and contents of these programs differ widely from
district to district.
