    MEMORANDUM
    To:
    District School Superintendents
    From:
    Jeanine Blomberg
    Date:
    September 29, 2005
    Subject:
FLORIDA’S GUIDE TO PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION
Beginning with the 2004-2005 school year, each district school board was required to provide
each student in sixth through ninth grade and their parents with information concerning the
three-year and four-year high school graduation program options, including respective
curriculum requirements for those options, so that students and their parents may select the
postsecondary education or career plan that best fits their needs.
Department staff representing the K-20 system collaborated in the development and
dissemination of technical assistance materials and resources designed to provide guidance to
schools and districts related to high school graduation. Please find attached
    Florida’s Guide to
Public High School Graduation for 2005-2006,
a brochure designed to provide valuable
information to parents and students regarding high school graduation, acceleration programs
and advanced coursework, comparison of high school graduation program options,
requirements for state university and community college admission, and requirements for Bright
    Futures.

Under separate cover, we will distribute copies of this brochure to your Student Services
Director for all students in sixth through ninth grade within the next six weeks. For your use in
planning for the new school year, an electronic copy of the English and Spanish versions of the
brochure is available on the Department’s website at
    http://www.firn.edu/doe/commhome/newgrad/new-grad.htm.
Additional information for counselors, parents, and students can also be obtained through the Florida
Academic Counseling and Tracking for Students website (www.FACTS.org) that includes high
school planning, career planning, college planning, and high school academic evaluations. The High
School Planner allows students and guidance counselors to plan a student's coursework from eighth
through twelfth grade based on the diploma option chosen by the student. The Planner can be
electronically saved, edited as needed, printed, sent home with students for parent/guardian
signatures, and returned to school. The
Florida Counseling for Future Education Handbook
    is also
available on the FACTS site and is a comprehensive reference to postsecondary education in
    Florida.
If you have questions or need additional information regarding K-12 curriculum, instruction, or
