Annual Black History Month Essay Contest (Governor’s Office)
PROGRAM
: Florida K-12 students are invited to participate in the Governor’s annual Black
History Month
Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Future
essay contes

Students’ essays
must be written on the topic, “How Florida’s African-American leaders or groups during the
Civil Rights Era, 1948-1969, impacted my life?” Maximum essay length is 500 words.
Partners of this year's essay contest include, the Florida Black Caucus and the Mary Brogan
Museum of Arts and Science. Sponsors for the essay contest include, the Florida Lottery and
Apple Computers.
DEADLINE
: January 8, 2003.
FUNDING
: One winner will be selected from each of the three grade-level categories,
elementary (grades K-5), middle (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12). Winners will
receive a trip to Tallahassee to attend the annual Black History Month Reception at the

Governor’s Mansion and a full four-year tuition scholarship to a state college or university of
their choice, provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.

Minority K-12 Health Science Experiences (NHLBI/NIH)
PROGRAM
: The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National
Institutes of Health (NIH), is inviting applications to develop programs to provide K-12 students
from minority groups underrepresented in the health sciences with creative science research
experiences that may interest them in pursuing scientific and medical careers related to heart,
lung, blood and sleep disorders.
DEADLINE
: February 21, 2003, for letters of intent; March 19, 2003, for applications.
FUNDING
: $2.4 million in fiscal year 2003 for six grants. Applicants may request up to
$250,000 per year each for five years
ELIGIBILITY
: For-profit and non-profit organizations that have an active NHLBI-funded
grant at the time of application.
The program requires collaboration with local schools and school districts, and other local
community and education organizations. An individual K-12 school is eligible to partner with an
applicant if at least half its students are members of minority groups that are underrepresented in
the biomedical, behavioral clinical or social sciences (specifically African American, Hispanic
and Native American students).

Secondary and Two-Year Postsecondary Agriculture Education Challenge
Grants (USDA)
PROGRAM
: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is inviting applications to
stimulate and enable colleges and universities to strengthen secondary education and two-year
postsecondary education in agriscience and agribusiness and promote links among two-year and
other higher education programs in the food and agricultural sciences.
DEADLINE
:
January 15, 2003.
FUNDING
: $960,000 in fiscal year 2003 for grants of up to $25,000 for single institution
projects and $40,000 total for joint projects. The project period is from 18 months to two years.

ELIGIBILITY
: Public secondary schools and public or private nonprofit junior and community
colleges. For secondary schools, each separate school in a school district that is a public
secondary school is eligible.

International Research and Studies Program (USDOE)
PROGRAM
: The United States Department of Education (USDOE) has reopened and
broadened its fiscal year 2003 competition for new awards to improve and strengthen modern
foreign language and area studies in United States colleges and universities.
USDOE changed its absolute priorities, which appeared in the September 26,
Federal Register
,
to invitational priorities, opening the door to applications that address a wider range of topics
than would have been considered under the initial announcement.
DEADLINE
: January 17, 2003.
FUNDING
: $5.2 million for 26 awards of $55,000 to $155,000 per year each for three years.

General Mills Champions
PROGRAM
: General Mills Champions is a new initiative created by the American Dietetic
Association Foundation, the President’s Challenge and the General Mills Foundation. The
program aims to improve youths’ nutrition and fitness in the United States through grants to
community-based groups. The initiative will also include sponsorship of the President’s Active
Lifestyle Awards, development of nutrition and fitness mentoring models and sharing best
practices.
DEADLINE
: February 1, 2003.
FUNDING
: Fifty grants of up to $10,000 each.
ELIGIBILITY
: Organizations with 501(c)(3) or 509(a) tax-exempt status.

G.I. Joe Real American Hero Search
PROGRAM
: The G.I. Joe Real American Hero Search, sponsored by Joe’s manufacturer,
Hasbro, Inc., is searching for kids who have performed brave, selfless acts that have impacted
the lives of others, in keeping with the spirit of G.I. Joe.
DEADLINE
: February 28, 2003.
FUNDING
: Five grand prize winners will receive a $2,500 donation to the charity of their
choice and a trip to Washington, D.C., in May where they will be honored in an awards
ceremony. One winner from each state and the District of Columbia will be selected from valid
nominations to receive an official G.I. Joe certificate of commendation, a G.I. Joe prize package
and eligibility to become one of the five grand prize winners.
ELIGIBILITY
: Anyone – parents, teachers, community leaders and kids – can nominate an
exceptional child, age 5-12, by submitting a short essay detailing a heroic, courageous or
unselfish deed or service performed by the child.
