Serving Pre-kindergarten Children with Disabilities
PROGRAM
: This grant will provide funding for the implementation of a
system of technical assistance and training that promotes high quality
programs which lead to and support positive outcomes for pre-kindergarten
children with disabilities and their families. The program must include these
five priorities: Program Effectiveness; Inclusion; Evaluation and Assessment;
Curriculum and Instruction, and Transition. For a description of these

their projects’ support for the Just Read, Florida! initiative and the federally

Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation
Donating New and Refurbished Musical Instruments
PROGRAM
: Composer of the film “Mr. Holland’s Opus” created this
foundation to help music education programs by ensuring the future of
music through the donation of new and refurbished musical instruments
and/or instrument repairs. There are three different funding programs,
which are: the melody program, the special projects program and the solo
program. To see descriptions of each program, visit the website below.
Priority will go to programs that lack financial support and serve students
who qualify for financial assistance.
DEADLINE
: Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed
three times a year.
FUNDING
: New instruments and instrument repairs.
ELIGIBILITY
: Schools, after-school music programs, youth orchestras and
community schools of the arts.

DisneyHand Teacher Awards / Walt Disney Community
Outreach
Honoring Teachers Who Exemplify Creativity and Inspiration
PROGRAM
: These awards honor teachers who exemplify creativity in
teaching and inspire a joy of learning in their students. Submit applications
in one of fifteen categories: Elementary – early childhood (preK-1); primary
(grades 2-3); intermediate (grades 4-6); Middle (grades 6-8) – humanities;
math; science; interdisciplinary team; High (grades 9-12) – humanities;
science; interdisciplinary team; Any range in PreK – the arts; special needs;
wellness and sports.

DEADLINE
: January 2, 2004.
FUNDING
: Forty awards of $10,000 each; expenses-paid to Los Angeles,
California, for a recognition ceremony and to Orlando, Florida, for a
professional development institute; and $5,000 for their school. One
“Outstanding Teacher of the Year” will receive an additional $15,000.
Winning teacher teams will share each honorarium among the team
members.

: Full-time U.S. classroom public or private school teachers.

Hewlett Packard Technology for Teaching Grants
Awarding Cash and Equipment to K-12 Schools
PROGRAM
: This initiative awards innovative and effective use of
technology to improve teaching and learning. Applicants should use a
collaborative, team-based system to implement technology in the classroom.
The projects must also use “technology to teach, rather than teaching
students to use technology.” Preference will be given to low-income schools
and those that will use the grant to boost math or science curriculum.
DEADLINE
: Applications will be accepted from January 15, 2004 through
March 1, 2004.
FUNDING
: Each winning school will receive five HP Tablet PCs, multimedia
projectors, and $500 stipends (one for each teacher on the team), HP Help
Desk technical support for one year, and customized professional
development.

Microsoft Unlimited Potential Grants
Assisting Disadvantaged Communities in Building Technology Centers
PROGRAM
: Microsoft will distribute more than $1 billion in grants over the
next five years. These grants will assist disadvantaged communities in
building community technology centers to boost technological literacy at the
local level. Each center will be a free or low cost friendly place (in a
community center, school, library, housing facility or other convenient
location) where people of all ages and abilities can come to learn about
computers, use the internet, explore new careers, further their education,
participate in community activities or develop technology skills. Each center
will be open to the public; informal and welcoming; have a strong leadership
base; hire approachable qualified staff or volunteers; work toward a clear
social benefit; use relevant curriculum; and have well-maintained and up-to-
date computer equipment, peripherals and connectivity.

: Varies.
ELIGIBILITY
: Nonprofits, school-based programs operating after-school
hours and organizations that are government funded and operated.

National School Fitness Foundation (NSFF)
Encouraging America’s Youth to Get Fit
PROGRAM
: Through the Leadership in Fitness Training (L.I.F.T.) program,
NSFF is encouraging America’s youth to L.I.F.T. themselves to a new level of
fitness. The winning schools will receive equipment, proven curriculum and
certification for staff. Schools will be required to provide adequate space for
the equipment, comply with all safety and assessment procedures, hire or
provide the staff to be certified in operating the fitness center and provide
regular assessment reports on the program’s progress. This grant comes at
a time of overwhelmingly high national trends in obesity.

FUNDING
: Fully equipped state-of-the-art fitness center, computerized
assessment system for personalizing each fitness program, staff in-service
training and certification and proven physical education curriculum for
regular ongoing use.

Teaching Tolerance Grant Program
Promoting Tolerance in Schools and Communities
PROGRAM
: The Teaching Tolerance projects of the Southern Poverty Law
Center is funding K-12 teachers for implementing tolerance and youth
activism projects in their schools and communities. The Teaching Tolerance
program generally funds projects that promise the most direct and
immediate student impact.

: Up to $2,000.
