Eliminating Poisoning Possibilities
 
PROGRAM:
The Environmental Protection Agency is seeking to reduce the
incidence of childhood lead poisoning in vulnerable populations. Projects
include activities that address areas with a high potential and areas with a
high incidence of blood-lead levels. They also strive to develop tools that
will address unique and challenging issues in lead poisoning prevention.
 
DEADLINE:
January 31, 2005.
 
FUNDING:
Total of $750,000 for grants of $25,000 to $100,000 each.
 
ELIGIBILITY:
Higher education institutions, nonprofit organizations,
including community action agencies, and state and local governments and
Native American tribes and tribal organizations.

Microbial Genome Sequencing / National Science
Foundation/United States Department of Agriculture
(NSF/USDA)
Making Sure We Are Biologically Safe
 
PROGRAM:
The Microbial Genome Sequencing program focuses on
sequencing of microorganisms that are of fundamental biological interest,
important to the national interest, related to the productivity and
sustainability of agriculture and forestry, and key to the safety and quality of
the nation’s food supply.
 
DEADLINE:
February 4, 2005.
 
 
FUNDING:
$15 million for 20 to 30 awards, with most from $100,000 to
$2.5 million each for three years.
 
 
ELIGIBILITY:
U.S. Academic institutions, nonprofit research organizations
and consortia of organizations with research facilities.

(NEH)
Improving Long-Term Institutions
 
PROGRAM
: The National Endowment for the Humanities invites application
for challenge grants to help institutions and organizations secure long-term
improvements in and support for humanities activities focused on U.S.
history and culture.
 
DEADLINE:
February 1, 2005.
 
FUNDING:
Ranging from $30,000 to $1 million.
 
ELIGIBILITY:
Colleges, universities, museums,
public libraries, research
institutions, historical societies and historic sites, public television and radio

stations, scholarly associations, state humanities councils, and other
nonprofit entities and consortia.

Banrock Station Wines Wetlands Conservation Program
Preserving Our Wetlands
 
PROGRAM:
The Banrock Station Wines Wetlands Conservation Program will
award grants to nonprofits that are planning and working on wetlands
conservation and restoration projects at the local level. Proposed projects
should show innovation, community support, opportunities for employee
involvement, measurable results and a significant effort for local wetland
protection.
 
DEADLINE:
January 15, 2005.
 
FUNDING:
Grants range from $1,000 to $5,000 each.
 
ELIGIBILITY:
501(c)3
 
nonprofit organizations and public agencies working
on wetland acquisition, restoration, habitat improvement, environmental
assessments, education, ecotourism and other related efforts.

Teacher Awards / Global School Net (GSN)
Recognizing Teachers Who Recognize Technology
 
PROGRAM:
Global School Net Foundation (GSN) is offering its annual GSN
Online Shared Learning Award. The award will recognize two classroom
teachers, one from within the 50 states and one from outside (including U.S.
territories) who excel in the area of online shared learning. They must be
current classroom teachers, media specialists, or other school-based
educators who have implemented student-centered online shared learning
projects with multiple classrooms. These teachers should inspire others to
get involved in online learning by offering guidance through workshops,
presentations, articles, websites, or mentoring.

DEADLINE:
January 14, 2005.
 
FUNDING:
$2,500 each to two teachers, one from the United States and
one outside the 50 states; several finalists will win $250 each.
 
ELIGIBILITY:
Classroom teachers working directly with students between
ages 4 and 19 who have distinguished themselves in the area of online
shared learning. Teachers who have conducted telecollaboration projects
only are not eligible for this grant.

Providing Grants in Several Areas
 
PROGRAM:
The Educational Foundation of America (EFA) makes grants to
qualifying non-profit organizations. Areas of interest include, but are not
limited to, the environment, the crisis of human overpopulation and
reproductive freedom, Native Americans, arts, education, medicine, and
human services.
 
DEADLINE:
Open.
 
FUNDING:
Varies. The Foundation prefers not to fund projects located
outside the United States.
 
ELIGIBILITY:
501(c)3 nonprofit organizations and those that are not
private foundations as defined in the internal revenue code.
