Assessing Underage Drinking
PROGRAM:
The National Institute of Health’s National Institute on Alcohol
Abuse and Alcoholism invites cooperative agreement applications under a
two-part program to assess the extent of underage drinking in rural areas
and develop local health systems’ capacities for dealing with the problem.
The purpose of these grants is to enhance alcohol research expertise and
help the primary care health delivery system in rural and small urban areas
address the critical public health issue of underage drinking.
DEADLINE:
November 19, 2005 for letters of inquiry. December 19, 2005
for applications.
FUNDING:
$2 million for three to five phase-one grants of $250,000 to
$400,000 each. The project period is three years.

ELIGIBILITY:
Organizations that are part of the primary health care
system, serve a rural population and reach many parts of the served
community. Applicants must be multidisciplinary, comprising two or more of
the following components; medicine, dentistry, allied health, nursing,
pharmacy, social work, and public health.

Geography Education National Implementation Project
(GENIP) / Travelocity
Promoting Geography Education
PROGRAM:
Travelocity and the Geography Education National
Implementation Project (GENIP) are sponsoring the Travelocity Award for
Excellence in Geography Education. This project is designed to celebrate
national and international efforts that promote geography education. The
GENIP steering committee will evaluate nominees, judging applications on
overall merit, well-defined goals, and indications of advancements toward or
achievement of those goals.
DEADLINE:
September 1, 2005.
FUNDING:
$5,000 and recognition at the meetings of the Association of
American Geographers and National Council for Geographic Education.
ELIGIBILITY:
Individuals or groups who have participated in or initiated
events or actions that have had beneficial national or international impact on
geography education.

Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy
Enhancing Family Literacy
PROGRAM:
The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy is designed to
develop or expand projects that support literacy in families. The
organization must operate an instructional literacy program that has been in
existence for at least 2 years and includes one or more of the following

components: literacy for adults, parent education, pre-literacy or literacy
instruction for children pre-k to grade 3, and intergenerational literacy
activities.

September 9, 2005.

Varies.

literacy for two or more years.

Tony Hawk Foundation
Providing Activity in a Community Environment
PROGRAM:
The Tony Hawk Foundation supports building high-quality public
skateparks in low-income areas throughout the United States. The
foundation will help fund the construction of public skateparks that are
designed and built by qualified skatepark contractors, and will be public and
open to anyone at any time. The parks will be built in low-income areas or
areas with a high population of at-risk youth. Local skaters will be included
in the design process. The community will need to show a solid grassroots
commitment to the project through local fundraising. The skatepark will
offer a variety of street obstacles and transition terrain, won’t require
skaters or their parents to sign waivers, will encourage skaters to look after
their own safety and the safety of others without over-regulating the park,
won’t charge admission, and will be located in areas that currently have no
skateboarding facilities.
DEADLINE:
September 1, 2005.
FUNDING:
$1,000 to $25,000.

Nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations, state and local agencies,
including public school systems, or public projects.

Encouraging the Young to Lead Organizations
PROGRAM:
MTV (Music Television) and Youth Ventures is offering the

Ventures contest for teens and young people trying to make a difference by
creating and leading their own organizations, clubs, or businesses that
address needs in their communities. The
think
Ventures awards will go to
organizations or businesses initiated by young people that focus on one of
the following: discrimination, education, environment, global issues, or
sexual health.
DEADLINE:
December 31, 2005.

Up to $1,000 and educational resources and tools.
