rd Graders in Reading
PROGRAM
: The Department of Education has dedicated $275,000 to a
mentoring initiative that targets 3
rd grade students. These students were
chosen due to the following factors: the Florida Center of Reading Research
concluded students learn to read during Pre-K to 3
rd grade; by 4
th grade,
they read to learn and 3
rd grade FCAT assessments are now used in part to
determine a student’s progress for promotion/retention purposes.

 
Applications for this initiative should focus on strategies designed to improve
the delivery of services, the quality of instruction and the appropriate
methods and intervals of assessment for the intended population.
Preference will be given to low performing schools.
DEADLINE
: September 15, 2003.
FUNDING
: Up to $5,000 per award.
ELIGIBILITY
: School districts on behalf of individual schools and non-
profits in conjunction with school districts.

Florida Department of Education / Mentoring Initiative –
Rural Districts
Assisting Schools with Student Enrollment Less than 30,000
PROGRAM
: The Rural District Initiative is designed to assist school districts
with enrollment populations of less than 30,000 students. The funding
provides incentive dollars to districts to partner and match dollars with
nonprofit groups and community based organizations to support a district-
level coordinator position for mentoring services. Preference will be given to
applicants whose proposals are designed to implement the Mentor Reading
Curriculum Guide developed under the auspices of the Governor’s Mentoring
Initiative.
DEADLINE
: September 15, 2003.
FUNDING
: Up to $20,000 per award.
ELIGIBILITY
: School districts, laboratory schools, post secondary
institutions as appropriate and non-profit organizations.

Florida Department of Education / Mentoring Initiative –
School-Based
Providing Incentive Dollars for Low Performing Schools
PROGRAM
: The Governor’s Mentoring School-Based Initiative provides
incentive dollars to districts and non-profit groups to partner with schools in
providing mentoring services. The Department invites your local schools to
submit proposals through their district office or through non-profit groups.
Preference will be given to low performing schools and to those applications
submitted on behalf of the schools that have received Accountability Grades
of “F” for the past two consecutive school years.

: September 15, 2003.
FUNDING
: Up to $10,000 per award.
ELIGIBILITY
: School districts on behalf of individual schools and non-profit
organizations in conjunction with school districts.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
Seeking Solutions to Campus-based Alcohol Abuse
PROGRAM
: The National Institute of Health is funding research programs
that seek solutions to college-based alcohol abuse problems. The proposed
projects can be funded up to three years and receive funds up to $200,000
per year. Funds will support state-of-the-art studies of services or
interventions that can capitalize on natural experiments (unexpected events,
policy changes, new media campaigns, etc.). University administrators,
partnered with a research scientist are encouraged to apply.
DEADLINE
: Applications are accepted year-round, with the next review
date scheduled for October 1, 2003.
FUNDING
: Up to $200,000 per year for a maximum three-year period.
ELIGIBILITY
: Public or private universities and colleges, faith- or
community-based organizations.

Donating Charitable Gifts
PROGRAM
: JM Family Enterprises, INC. is looking to donate charitable gifts
to 501(c)(3) organizations who are focused primarily on at-risk and
disadvantaged youth, education, the arts and multi-cultural diversity. Since
its inception in 1968, JM Family’s hands-on approach has earned numerous
awards. Charitable gift requests are reviewed as they are received.
However, all organizations should allow 4 to 6 weeks for review and research
of a charitable request.
DEADLINE
: Requests for funds should be made as far in advance as
possible since the company finalizes its budget in the fourth quarter of the
prior calendar year.

: Varies.

: Non-profit 501(c) 3 organizations within South Florida

The Green Family Foundation
Empowering Disenfranchised Communities
PROGRAM
: The Green Family Foundation funds projects that engage and
empower disenfranchised communities; that is, projects that include and
involve the people they seek to benefit without imposing upon the dignity or
rights of the beneficiaries. They are committed to working with non-profit
agencies and community leaders. The Foundation looks for programs that
show potential and have developed long-term plans to sustain and even

expand their efforts. In this sense, special consideration is given to entities
that are able to secure matching funds and those that have a proven record
of accomplishment within the community. The Foundation also supports and
encourages the development of new and creative ways to respond to long-
standing social problems rather than merely funding existing programs.

: Open for letters of inquiry. Upon invitation, proposals are
accepted between July 1st and October 1st each year.

Funding for a Variety of Program Areas
PROGRAM
: The BankAtlantic Foundation funds specific projects as well as
general operations for programs within the areas of arts and culture,
education and literacy, community and economic development, or social
services.
DEADLINE
: Proposals are received and reviewed from May 1st to
November 1st.
FUNDING
: Majority range from $1,000 to $3,000.

: Programs within BankAtlantic communities including

With Arms Wide Open Foundation
Encouraging Healthy Parent-Child Relationships
PROGRAM
: The With Arms Wide Open Foundation protects the lives and
well-being of children by seeking to ensure healthy, loving, nurturing bonds

between children and their parents. The foundation gives general funding to
established family-service providers as well as project funds to fill gaps
identified by these organizations. The Foundation's intent is to raise
awareness of the importance of healthy parent-child relationships; to
provide encouraging support and education to parents, and to identify and
address problematic areas that impede the development of healthy, loving,
nurturing parent-child relationships. Past projects included: providing
assistance to poor/low income families, providing assistance to families
dealing with a crisis that threatens the family unit, education, public policy
and judicial action.
