Improving Reading Comprehension
PROGRAM:
The Reading Comprehension program supports projects that
address the underlying causes of problems with reading comprehension;
develop assessments for use in instructional settings to identify sources of
comprehension difficulties; and provide evidence of the effectiveness of
reading interventions. (CFDA#84.305G)
DEADLINE:
October 28, 2004.
FUNDING:
Ranges from $150,000 to $1.2 million a year, each, for up to
five years.
ELIGIBILITY:
Colleges, Universities and other nonprofit and for-profit
organizations.

Research and Development Centers / US Department of
Education
Improving Student Achievement
PROGRAM:
The Education Department Research and Development centers’
program is intended to contribute significantly to the solution of education
problems by developing, testing and disseminating new approaches to
improve teaching and learning, and ultimately, student achievement.
Centers will focus on assessment, education policy, early childhood
education, and English language learners. (CFDA#84.305A)

FUNDING:
Ranges from $1 million to $2 million.

Higher education institutions, non-profit 501(c)3
organizations, state and local governments, independent school districts,
and for-profit organizations.

Best Buy Children’s Foundation / te@ch Program
Integrating Interactive Programs into Curriculum
PROGRAM:
Best Buy Co., Inc. and the Best Buy Children’s Foundation are
committed to integrating technology into school curriculum. They want to
recognize schools that are integrating technology into their curriculum. They
are particularly interested in innovative, interactive programs or projects
that make learning fun for students. The purpose of te@ch is to reward
schools for successful, interactive programs that have been launched using
available technology.
DEADLINE:
October 1, 2004.
FUNDING:
1500 awards of
$2,500.

Ezra Jack Keats Foundation
Encouraging Literacy and Creativity
PROGRAM:
The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation offers Minigrants for programs
that encourage literacy and creativity in children. They suggest, before
applying, that you read the ideas for minigrants page on their website, as
listed below.
The Foundation has been focused on bettering the lives of children through
programs to increase literacy; to inspire creativity and love of learning; and
to enhance appreciation of the arts in children, their families and
communities.

Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation, co-founded
in 1999 by Garth Brooks, helps children in the areas of health, education and
inner-city services. The Foundation is comprised of athletes, celebrities,
organizations, and fans. The purpose of Teammates for Kids Foundation is
to contribute financial resources to serve and benefit children.

National Music Foundation / American Music Education
Initiative (AMEI)
Recognizing Creative Educational Accomplishments
PROGRAM:
The AMEI of the National Music Foundation is designed to
identify, recognize and support the creative educational accomplishments of
teachers who use American music in the classroom. Music is disappearing
from classrooms, due to budget cuts and the idea that arts are not
important. The AMEI encourages, recognizes and helps support teachers
who are using American music in classrooms.
DEADLINE:
September 16, 2004.
FUNDING:
Ranges from $500-$1,000.
ELIGIBILITY
: Open to teachers of any subject, in any grade K-12, and in
any academic setting.
