Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP).

PURPOSE OF PROGRAM:
The Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP)
provides grants to Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) for innovative model
programs providing for the establishment, improvement, or expansion of foreign
language study for elementary and secondary school students. Under this
competition, as required by the fiscal year 2008 Appropriations Act, 5-year grants
will be awarded to LEAs to work in partnership with one or more Institutions of

Higher Education (IHEs) to establish or expand articulated programs of study in
languages critical to United States national security in order to enable successful
students to achieve a superior level of proficiency in those languages as they
advance from elementary school through high school and college. In addition, an
LEA that receives a grant under this program must use the funds to support
programs that show the promise of being continued beyond the grant period and
demonstrate approaches that can be disseminated to and duplicated in other
LEAs. Projects supported under this program may also include a professional
development component.

April 30, 2008.
ESTIMATED AVERAGE SIZE OF AWARDS:
$200,000. Estimated number of
awards is 12.
ELIGIBILITY:
LEAs, including charter schools that are considered LEAs under
State law, in partnership with one or more institutions of higher education.

Department of Transportation / State Safety Office / Safe
Routes to School Call Program
PROGRAM:
Safe Routes to School Call Program.

PURPOSE OF PROGRAM:
Safe Routes to School Call Program (SRTS) is a new
federal reimbursement program to enable and encourage children in grades K-8,
including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school; to make walking
and bicycling to school safer and more appealing; and to facilitate the planning,
development, and implementation of projects that will improve safety and reduce
traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of schools. In addition to
encouraging more children to walk or bike to school, the program also seeks to
address the safety needs of children already walking or bicycling in less than
ideal conditions.
DEADLINE:
April 30, 2008.
ESTIMATED AVERAGE SIZE OF AWARDS:
Florida’s SRTS Program will provide
approximately $29.1 million throughout Florida, through fiscal year 2009.
ELIGIBILITY:
For Infrastructure Projects, eligible applicants are School Boards
for public schools (Chair, Vice-Chair or their designee); private schools
(Headmaster, Assistant Headmaster or their designee); and Community Traffic
Safety Teams (Chair or Vice-Chair). However, most applicants will also need to

partner with a Maintaining Agency (a government agency which is able to enter
into a legal agreement with Florida Department of Transportation, provide the
initial funding before being reimbursed, and be responsible for maintaining the
completed Infrastructure Projects).

The Comprehensive Program supports innovative
grants and cooperative agreements to advance postsecondary education. It
supports reforms, innovations, and significant improvements of postsecondary
education that react to problems of national significance and serve as national
models.

$500,000. Estimated number of

PURPOSE OF PROGRAM:
The
PWI program creates and expands job and career
opportunities for individuals with disabilities in the competitive labor market by
engaging the talent and leadership of private industry as partners in the
rehabilitation process. Projects identify competitive job and career opportunities
and the skills needed to perform those jobs, create practical settings for job
readiness and training programs, and provide training, job placements, and
career advancement services.
DEADLINE:
May 27, 2008.
ESTIMATED AVERAGE SIZE OF AWARDS:
$300,000. Estimated number of
awards is 63.
ELIGIBILITY:
Employers, nonprofit agencies or organizations, designated state
units, labor unions, community rehabilitation program providers, trade
associations, Indian tribes, tribal organizations, and other agencies or
organizations, including faith-based and community organizations, with the
capacity to create and expand job and career opportunities for individuals with
disabilities.
Grant awards will be made only to organizations that provide job and career
opportunities for individuals with disabilities within the state in which the
organization is located or a contiguous state.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency / National Clean Diesel
Campaign
PROGRAM:
National Clean Diesel Campaign.

PURPOSE OF PROGRAM:
The Environmental Protection Agency will award
grants to assist its eligible partners in building diesel emission reduction
programs across the country that improve air quality and protect public health.
DEADLINE:
June 12, 2008.
ESTIMATED AVERAGE SIZE OF AWARDS:
$250,000 to $750,000. Estimated
number of awards is 5-10.
ELIGIBILITY:
Regional, state, local, tribal, or port agencies with jurisdiction
over transportation or air quality; and nonprofit organizations or institutions that
represent or provide pollution reduction or educational services to persons or
organizations that operate diesel engines.

ING Unsung Heroes / Scholarship America / ING Unsung
Heroes Program
PROGRAM:
ING Unsung Heroes Program.
PURPOSE OF PROGRAM:
The ING Unsung Heroes Awards Program, along with
Scholarship America, rewards individuals on the basis of their innovative teaching
methods, creative educational projects, and ability to make a positive influence
on the children they teach. The awards are given to K-12 educators pioneering
new methods and techniques that improve student learning.
DEADLINE:
April 30, 2008.
ESTIMATED AVERAGE SIZE OF AWARDS:
One hundred educators will receive
$2,000 each. Of the 100 finalists, three will be selected for additional financial
awards. First place will receive $25,000; second place will receive $10,000; and
the third place winner will receive $5,000. At least one award will be given in
each of the 50 states, provided one or more qualified applications are received
from each state.
ELIGIBILITY:
All K-12 education professionals who are employed by an
accredited K-12 public or private school and are full-time educators, teachers,
principals, paraprofessionals, or classified staff who improve student learning.

The Women's Sports Foundation / GoGirlGo! National Grant
Program
PROGRAM:
GoGirlGo! National Grant Program.
PURPOSE OF PROGRAM:
To assist sports/physical activity programs seeking to
add new or expand program participation opportunities for an under-served
population of girls, specifically economically disadvantaged girls and/or girls from
populations with high rate of health-risk behaviors. Preference will be given to
organizations working consistently with girls throughout the year.
DEADLINE:
May 9, 2008.
ESTIMATED AVERAGE SIZE OF AWARDS:
A total of $430,000 will be
awarded. In 2007, the average grant award was $5,700.
