In our continued effort to provide teachers with high quality Reading Endorsement professional
development at little or no cost, the Just Read, Florida! office is pleased to announce the
availability of an additional online course entitled Foundations and Applications of Differentiated
Instruction (FADI). This online course is offered through North East Florida Educational
Consortium (NEFEC). Please note that FADI fully satisfies competencies four and five of the
Reading Endorsement. Additional information about FADI professional development, including
training goals and objectives, assignment schedule, and technical requirements are available
online at http://www.nefec.org/fadi. Teachers may begin to register immediately.
Upon entering the FADI home page, select the desired session start date from the list on the right side
of the screen. A page with additional information about the training will appear with a link at the
bottom of the page to register. Teachers should follow the registration prompts through the next
series of screens to provide contact information and to complete the registration process.

Please do not delay in communicating information about this opportunity to your teachers,
since open slots will be filled on a first-come first-served basis.
Multiple classes will be held
during the following time frames and teachers may select the time period that best suits their
schedule. Confirmations will be sent to teachers who have secured a complimentary slot and to those
who did not.
The sessions will be held on the following dates:
•
Oct. 15, 2007 to Feb. 18, 2008
•
Jan. 21, 2008 to May 5, 2008
•
Mar. 10, 2008 to June 23, 2008
The required textbooks for FADI are:
When Kids Can’t Read, What Teachers Can Do
by Kylene
Beers, 2003, published by Heinemann (ISBN 0-86709-519-9), Price: $35.00 and
Fulfilling the
Promise of the Differentiated Classroom
by Carol Ann Tomlinson, 2003, published by the
Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ISBN 0-87120-812-1), Price: $30.00.
We are asking that, if possible, each district absorb the cost of the textbooks for their teachers
enrolled in the class.
NEFEC has texts in stock and can reorder. The textbook is also available
through a variety of online bookstores.
We recognize that not all districts will be able to purchase
the textbooks, so teachers need to be aware that they may have to purchase their own books.
Once registration is completed, we will notify district Reading Endorsement contacts of the
registrants from their district so that the appropriate number of books can be secured. You may wish
for teachers to pick up their textbooks at the district office, or you may choose to deliver them to the
teachers at their respective schools by courier, if that service is available.
If a district is unable to
purchase the textbook, please let Garnette Knapp know immediately so that registrants can be
notified and be given the option to purchase or borrow the book themselves or drop the class.
She can be contacted at (386) 329-3800 or by email at knappg@nefec.org.
Districts may wish to
consider purchasing sets of books to be loaned to teachers for the duration of the class.
We are very excited about this opportunity for your teachers. If you have questions about the
registration process, please contact Garnette Knapp at (386) 329-3800 or by e-mail at
knappg@nefec.org. If you have other questions, please contact Barbara Elzie at (850) 245-0503 or
by e-mail at barbara.elzie@fldoe.org.
